Embracing Imperfection on the Business Path
11th Aug 23
Embracing imperfection where to start. How about here . . .
“Am I really cut out for this? Am I just faking it? What if they discover I don’t know as much as they think I do?”
These questions have echoed through my mind countless times on my journey as a wellbeing business owner. These days I am aware I’m not alone. Yet at the start of my business journey I honestly thought I was.
The small business journey is often glamorised as a parade of triumphs, with tales of success filling our newsfeeds and networking meetings. Yet rarely do we hear about the silent battles waged within. The battles against doubt, fear and the feeling that we’re merely masquerading as competent professionals.
As I embarked on my own wellbeing business journey, armed with dreams, ideas, and a dash of naivety, I thought I was ready for anything. Little did I know that one of the fiercest opponents I would face was the voice inside my head, whispering that I wasn’t worthy of the success I sought.
Imposter Syndrome
Impostor syndrome, that sneaky psychological trait, infiltrated my thoughts at unexpected moments. Creping in during writing promotional emails, as I questioned whether I truly had the expertise to deliver what we were promising. Lingering over my brainstorming sessions with my lovely business partner Alexis, casting doubt on the originality of my ideas. It even seeped into moments of celebration, whispering that luck, not skill, had paved my way. It really wasn’t any fun. In fact, it made the idea of being in business torturous.
If you’ve ever questioned your worthiness in your business endeavours, if you’ve ever felt like a fraud despite the achievement’s others point out you’ve made, you’re not alone. I’ll happily share the lessons I’ve learned and the strategies I’ve adopted to combat the silent, yet deadly saboteur.
Embracing Vulnerability: The Key to Accepting Imperfection
In the fast-paced world of business, where your success is often measured by numbers and profits, the idea of embracing vulnerability might seem counterintuitive. Vulnerability is often considered a sign of weakness. It took time for me to realise that it was the opposite and actually a powerful tool. Delving into the heart of vulnerability was like stepping into uncharted territory. It meant acknowledging my fears, doubts and insecurities (it was imperfection galore) and daring to confront them head-on.
Navigating this path required a shift in perspective. Instead of viewing vulnerability as a hindrance, I began to see it as an opportunity for growth. It was a chance to connect with my business partner and other wellbeing business folk on a deeper level. It was the gateway to authenticity and ironically, the antidote to the impostor syndrome and the seeming imperfection that had held me captive. Who’d have thought!
Confronting Self-Doubt: Strategies for Resilience
Confronting self-doubt and in some cases, self-hate was no easy feat, but it was an essential step toward emerging stronger. Here are a few strategies I found invaluable:
1. Celebrate Small Wins
Acknowledging and celebrating even the tiniest achievements helped counterbalance the impostor feelings. It was tangible evidence and a great reminder for when self-doubt episodes began to state otherwise around being of value or of help to others. Each accomplishment, no matter how small, became a steppingstone to greater confidence.
2. Seek Support
Opening up about my struggles to Alexis and other trusted peers provided a fresh perspective. I became aware I wasn’t alone and outing my doubt helped me to feel less burdened. Their encouragement and shared experiences served as a reality check against the negative self-talk.
3. Embrace Collaborative Learning
Acknowledging that nobody possesses all the answers constantly, I dedicated myself to continual learning. This pursuit wasn’t solely about enhancing my expertise; it’s about understanding that growth blossoms from shared insights. Initiate seeking assistance without fear – it’s a sign of strength. This approach fosters a sense of community spirit and creative solutions, lifts the pressure of perfectionism and propels you towards your goals.
Embracing Imperfection: Emerging Stronger
Embracing imperfection and confronting self-doubt led to an unexpected transformation. Gradually, the grip of impostor syndrome loosened, and I began to see myself through a different lens. The mistakes I once dreaded became opportunities for learning. The challenges I faced transformed into steppingstones toward personal and professional growth.
While the journey through self-doubt and vulnerability was not without its challenges, it paved the way for a newfound strength. I emerged from the shadows of impostor syndrome not as an imposter, but as a resilient business owner who had navigated uncharted waters and emerged more authentic than ever before.
Rewriting the Narrative: A Call to Action
As we navigate our respective journeys, let us remember that vulnerability is not a weakness, but a sign of our humanity. By embracing imperfection and confronting self-doubt, we rewrite the narrative that casts shadows on our path to success.
So, let’s collectively challenge the notion that success is a parade of triumphs without internal battles. Let’s shine a light on the struggles around imperfection and celebrate the growth that emerges from them. As wellbeing business owners, as entrepreneurs and as individuals, we are capable of embracing vulnerability and emerging stronger on the other side. It won’t just benefit you; it will benefit all the lovely people that need the fabulous support you offer!
