How Dealing With Your Insecurity And Self-Doubt Can Help You Grow Your Wellness Business
19th Jul 21
Without fail, the number one reason holistic therapists and yoga teachers give for why they are struggling to grow their business is a lack of confidence.
As a business coach, I hear this time and time again. I get it.
A Wobble In My Confidence
Writing this, I am thinking back to my early career as a reflexologist and the time a lack of confidence threatened to derail my wellness businesses before it had even started.
As a newly qualified reflexologist in 2001, I was excited to share my skills and newly acquired knowledge. I knew that I could help so many people. It came as quite a shock when people were not queuing round the block for an appointment with me; even worse than that, when I did get a few bookings, they then often didn’t re-book.
Very quickly, I began to feel as though it was me. Maybe I wasn’t good enough. I am sure you will recognise a few of these monkey mind thoughts.
I am not a good enough reflexologist; maybe I need to do some more qualifications.
There are just too many reflexologists where I live. There isn’t enough work to go around; maybe if I drop my prices, I will attract people to my practice.
A Change In My Approach!
How did I turn this around? I quickly realised that although there were a lot of other reflexologists in my local area, it was also an area with a lot of people. It couldn’t be true that none of them wanted my treatment.
So, what was going on? After a bit of thought, I had one of those light bulb moments. I wasn’t talking to the right people. I had no strategy for letting people know that I was open and ready for business. I was putting up posters and posting leaflets through letterboxes (this was in the days before the internet) without giving any thought to who would want my reflexology services or focusing on what problems I could solve for them.
Once I realised this. I began to put my reflexology services in front of the people that I knew I was best placed to help. I orientated my marketing towards the problems they were struggling with and started writing and talking about how my reflexology could help them.
In a matter of weeks, I was fully booked.
I don’t think I can write a blog about confidence without mentioning the Covid 19- pandemic. So, many wellness business owners have been challenged, like never before. It is not unsurprising that many business owner’s confidence and bank balances have taken a knock.
However, the same rules apply whether you are at the beginning of your wellness career or have been going for many years. It is important to be putting yourself in front of the right audience for YOU.
As someone who regularly puts herself out there, presenting webinars, writing this blog, creating resources. I will say that it does get easier the more you do it.
Allow yourself the freedom to make a mistake; remember that you took the time to learn and practice your therapy or yoga skills. Now you need to do the same with your sales and marketing skills.
The future of our industry is looking bright now is your time!
